"The Sign of the Black Rock" Character Designs

It definitely seems odd to be hyping new characters for the second Three Thieves book when the first book still doesn't hit store shelves for six months. Other than myself and a few "inside" folks at Kids Can Press, nobody even knows the old characters yet! But the new cast members are a lot of fun, and I enjoy these sketches of them, so here they are for the world to see.

Unfortunately, you'll have to wait until The Sign of the Black Rock is released in fall 2011 to learn more about this motley group and the hijinks they find themselves in (though I may be posting some pencilled pages soon, to give you some clues...so watch this space!)

  1. They look great! Wallace has the physical characteristics of Oliver Hardy from Laural and Hardy. Perhaps his personality will be the same?

  3. Tim: it's actually the design for TWO characters, who are identical twins. And you get a prize (note: not really), because Oliver Hardy was EXACTLY who I had in mind.

    BD: Alas, no. The first thing my editor said upon seeing these designs was "lose the cigarette". He may be a dashing rogue, but he's now one with clean lungs!
